



As librarians, we keep an eye on literary awards, both to purchase for the library and to possibly read ourselves. The National Book Foundation awards prizes in four categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry and Young People's Literature.
This year's fiction finalists are:
Bonnie Jo Campbell. American Salvage (Wayne State University Press). Campbell is a Michigan native writing about Michigan. synopsis.
Colum McCann. Let the Great World Spin (Random House). The book is "a dazzlingly rich vision of the pain, loveliness, mystery, and promise of New York City in the 1970s." synopsis.
Daniyal Mueenuddin. In Other Rooms, Other Wonders (Norton). This is Mueenuddin’s first book -- a collection of interlinked stories about a Pakistani family, their servants, managers and extended family. synopsis.
Jayne Anne Phillips. Lark and Termite (Knopf). A story of loss and love, war, family secrets, dreams and ghosts. synopsis.
Marcel Theroux. Far North (Farrar, Straus and Giroux). "Out on the far northern border of a failed state, Makepeace--sheriff and perhaps the last citizen--patrols the city ruins, salvaging books but keeping the guns in good repair." book summary synopsis.
